Take a deep breath through your nose and…
Do you remember to focus on your breathing while you work? Do you take a moment and take a deep breath in and out? I believe many do not. I don’t think I would do it myself if I didn’t breathe with my clients on a daily basis. At work, you need to focus on many other things than your breathing. By conducting office trainings, we all do breathing exercises together each time, each at our own pace. At the same time, I emphasize to people that it is not necessary to breathe in the coach’s rhythm, everyone can find their own breathing rhythm.
Breathing exercises are great to do alone while working. Close your eyes and focus only on your breathing and nothing else. Think of it as a relaxed office workout.
For example, I will give the 4-7-8 breathing exercise.
Find a position that suits you, either standing up against the wall, lying down or sitting. Take a few deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth to prepare yourself for the exercise. Close your eyes.
- Close your mouth, place the tip of your tongue behind your front teeth and breathe deeply through your nose while mentally counting to four: “1…2…3…4”
- Hold your breath, count to seven: “1…2…3…4…5…6…7”
- Exhale deeply through the mouth, count to eight: “1…2…3…4…5…6…7…8”
Breathe like this about 4 times and enjoy its relaxing effect.
In the beginning, it’s completely understandable if you can’t hold your breath until you count to 7, for example. In the beginning, you can’t hold your breath for too long. Both skill and habit come with time.
I recommend doing this exercise during a stressful moment at work – it calms, enriches the brain with oxygen and helps to get out of a stressful situation faster and more efficiently. It can also be done at a more boring moment – the exercise is useful in any situation.
Happy breathing!
